UNION CARBIDE MARKS NATION'S FIRST BULK SHIPMENT
OF POST-CONSUMER RECYCLED PLASTIC
PISCATAWAY, N.J., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation's (NYSE: UK) Plastics Recycling Plant here has shipped the nation's first large-volume delivery of recycled polyethylene resin produced entirely from discarded plastic, collected from curbside recycling programs. The 120,000-pound rail car shipment, representing the amount of discarded plastic typically generated in one year by a town of 12,000, will be used by one of the plant's major customers, Rubbermaid Inc., in the manufacture of trash containers.
"This shipment marks a milestone in plastics recycling," said Keith Atkins, Union Carbide's business director for solid waste management. "It signals the availability of very good quality, post-consumer polyethylene that meets the high-volume needs of major manufacturers, as they respond to increasing consumer pressure for recycled plastics," he noted.
Union Carbide will sell recycled resin to manufacturers of soap and detergent bottles, drainage pipes, refuse and recycling containers, garbage and merchandise bags and wrapping. The plant, which opened in late 1991, can process more than 54 million pounds of post-consumer plastics per year. These include polyethylene terephthalate (PET) found in soda, liquor, and salad dressing bottles; high-density polyethylene (HDPE) found in milk, juice, water jugs, soap, and detergent bottles; and polyethylene film used for bags and wrapping.
The recyclable plastic comes from curbside recycling programs sponsored by communities in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania that fall within a 250-mile radius from the plant.
