UNION CARBIDE INCREASES ETHYLENEAMINES CAPACITY AT TAFT, LA. PRODUCTION FACILITY

DANBURY, Conn., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK) has completed a project which expands its ethyleneamines capacity by 50 million pounds annually as a result of debottlenecking, technology improvements, and enhanced maintenance programs, the company announced today. The increase brings total capacity to 230 million pounds at the company's Taft, La. production facility.
Union Carbide produces ethyleneamines in two units at the Taft complex -- one using an ethylene dichloride process and the other employing the company's ethylene oxide-based technology. Both units were upgraded in the expansion process. Their coordinated operation gives Union Carbide unparalleled flexibility in meeting worldwide demand for the company's ethyleneamines product line.
"This capacity addition is a major step in an ongoing program to strengthen our strategic ethyleneamines business," said Gene Shackelford, vice president and general manager of Union Carbide's ethylene oxide derivatives group. "Worldwide, demand for ethyleneamines is expected to outpace global economic growth. The new capacity is one of a series of steps we're taking to meet customers' long term needs, along with the continuing commitment of resources for the implementation of our leading-edge ethyleneamines product and process technology." Ethyleneamines are chemical intermediates used in the manufacture of lubricating oil additives, polyamides, epoxy curing agents, wet-strength resins, chelates, fungicides, and various other products.
