UNION CARBIDE DIVISION PRESIDENT RECEIVES AWARD

WASHINGTON, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph C. Soviero, president of the Specialty Chemicals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, has received the 1993 Honor Award of the Commercial Development Association (CDA).
CDA, an organization of professionals engaged in bringing new products and processes to market, presented its annual award to Mr. Soviero for his career-long leadership in the commercial development and transformation of the Specialty Chemicals Division from a regional to a global business, and the more than tripling of its annual sales during his tenure. This growth was accomplished by the development and commercialization of new specialty products with which the division successfully penetrated a variety of domestic and international markets.
Additionally, Mr. Soviero was instrumental in the acquisition of Amerchol Corporation, a leading producer of raw materials for hair and skin care products that operates as a subsidiary of the Specialty Chemicals Division, and the Belgian-based hydroxyethyl cellulose business of B.P. Chemicals. With these acquisitions Union Carbide became a major player in the worldwide personal care and other markets.
This year's presentation to Mr. Soviero was made during the association's annual meeting, which marks CDA's 50th anniversary.
As president of the Specialty Chemicals Division, a position he attained in 1983, Mr. Soviero is responsible for the worldwide operation and growth of a business with annual sales of more than $1 billion. The division's major areas of manufacture include silicones, urethane additives, water soluble polymers, biocides, and chemicals for use in oil fields, gas treating and personal care products.
In addition to being president of the Specialty Chemicals Division, Mr. Soviero has responsibility for Union Carbide Chemicals and Plastics Europe. He is also Union Carbide management's representative and alternating chairman of the new UOP, which was established in 1988 as a joint venture by Union Carbide and Allied-Signal. UOP is the leading worldwide supplier of technology, products and services to the refining and petrochemical industries.
A chemical industry spokesman for many years, Mr. Soviero is currently chairman of the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association. He is also a member of the Chemical Industry Association, the Chemical Management & Resources Association and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, as well as the Commercial Development Association. In 1986 he received the CMRA Award for Executive Excellence.
Mr. Soviero holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Polytechnic Institute and master's degrees in engineering and business administration from New York University. He and his wife, the former Romy Lee, reside in Ridgefield, Conn. Their daughter, Susan, lives in New York City.
