UNION CARBIDE DEVELOPS LUBRICANT FOR OZONE-SAFE AUTOMOBILE AIR CONDITIONERS

 DANBURY, Conn., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Union Carbide Corporation (NYSE: UK) today announced it has developed a new lubricant that represents a major step in the race to phase out ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Union Carbide is the first U.S.-based company to develop and market this type of lubricant.
 UCON(R) Refrigeration Lubricant 488 is a synthetic material from the polymers family, polyalkylene glycol. It is designed specifically for use with refrigerant HFC-134a, the industry's choice to replace the chlorinated refrigerant CFC-12. The new refrigerant (HFC-134a) is a hydrofluorocarbon product that contains no chlorine and will not damage the earth's ozone layer.
 "The development of a workable lubricant enables car makers to convert to the alternative refrigerant HFC-134a without major modifications to existing air conditioning systems," explained Dr. Gene Boros, vice president, Specialty Chemicals Division. Dr. Boros added that the lubricant allows HFC-134a to work not only in new air conditioning systems, but also in the systems of cars already on the road.
 The lubricant is the first to be approved by General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) for use with HFC-134a. The new refrigerant system is already being installed in some 1993 GM models, including Camaro, Trans-Am and passenger vans.
 UCON refrigeration lubricants have a wide range of applications. Some lubricants are also being used in CFC-free office and industrial air conditioning systems.
 Union Carbide invented polyalkylene glycols 50 years ago and today is the world's largest producer of these synthetic fluids and lubricants, used in more than 30 industries worldwide.
