UNDP to Further Cooperation with SyriaA.

Damascus, (SANA)- Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad stressed Syria's interest in promoting standing cooperation with the United Nations' programs. Mikdad's remarks came during his meeting on Tuesday with a delegation of the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Population Fund (UNPF). He highlighted the strong existing cooperation between the parties concerned in Syria and the UN institutions interested in issues of development. Mikdad underscored Syria's interest in the visit of the UN delegation which represents a number of brotherly and friendly countries, to convey the image of the development Syria has been recently witnessing to the UNDP and the UNPF. Qatari Ambassador to the UN and Head of the delegation, Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser voiced the delegation's desire to build strong partnership with Syria, appreciating Syria's cooperation with the UN institutions regarding efforts in the development sector. Earlier, Chairman of the State Planning Commission Amer Hosni Lutfi discussed on Tuesday with the UN delegation ways of promoting cooperation in developmental issues. Lutfi stressed the importance of cooperation between Syria and UN organizations through executing vital projects consistent with the goals of the international organization in reaching a sustainable development. He said that Syria is witnessing many reforms in the economic, financial and investment sectors. "These reforms play a pivotal role in increasing the national income," asserted Lutfi. Lutfi added that the 11th five-year plan focuses on increasing the growth rate to more than 6% along with improving investment environment and creating new and varied job opportunities and rehabilitation of the human resources. Al-Nasser said that the visit comes within the framework of the cooperation relations between the UN institutions in Syria and the Syrian government. He added that there will be a final report about the results of the visit followed by discussion about ways and mechanisms of supporting the Syrian government's plans in development sector. M.
