UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES AND RESEARCH TRIANGLE INSTITUTE ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION IN ASSESSING QUALITY SYSTEMS FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) continues to enhance its ISO 9000 Registration Program for Quality Assurance through a collaboration with Research Triangle Institute (RTI) on evaluating quality management systems for software development of U.S. companies.
UL's quality assessments of software determine compliance to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000 guideline standards for software development, supply and maintenance. RTI will provide additional technical resources to UL's auditors when they perform quality assessment of companies that develop, supply and maintain software systems.
In today's high-tech world, information-based systems and software technology are essential to business management and operations. It is becoming increasingly important that developers of software products and information systems adopt appropriate standards and practices which will help them meet users' expectations for high-quality software products consistently -- from design to delivery.
According to Bob Levine, UL vice president of Follow-Up Services, the new alliance provides an opportunity to serve the software industry better. "Our collaborative efforts bring together two independent, not- for-profit organizations that are well known for their broad range of services and their integrity. This collaboration with RTI enhances UL's depth of resources and expertise in the software quality arena and expands UL's capabilities to provide comprehensive software audits for ISO 9000 Registration."
James B. Clary, RTI vice president of Electronics and Systems, added, "Since the mid-seventies, RTI computer scientists and engineers have worked under the sponsorship of government and commercial organizations to identify and implement improved methods for validating software reliability. Now, in working with UL, we are using this knowledge and experience to benefit America's computer software and hardware industries as we help companies meet the rigorous requirements of the national and international marketplace."
