Inspired by the workshop of the same title held in Tokyo in February 2003 by the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies of Nanyang Technical U. (Singapore) and the United Nations U. (Japan), these nine papers including an introduction examine the current state of UN peace operations and analyze issues of critical relevance to the security of the region. Contributors focus on current trends in UN peacekeeping from regional and Asian perspectives, the involvement of non-governmental organizations in conflict resolution, Japan's policy and China's changing attitude toward UN peacekeeping, the work of the UN and others in Cambodia, and the role of the UN in East Timor's moving from self-determination to state-building. The conclusion details Asian norms and practices in UN-based peace operations. The volume includes a digest of UN peacekeeping operations for May through July 2004 and a brief review of documentation relating to possible peacekeeping in southern Sudan.
