UN AGENCY PRESENTS LIFETIME ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
TO S.C. JOHNSON CHAIRMAN SAMUEL JOHNSON
NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Nations today recognized the lifelong environmental commitment of Samuel C. Johnson, chairman of S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc., with a special award honoring his "outstanding individual and corporate leadership in the protection of our global environment."
The United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) award was presented in the General Assembly Hall during the final ceremony of the UNEP's Global Youth Forum by Dulcie de Montagnac, GYF coordinator. The Global Youth Forum, sponsored by UNEP, is the world's largest annual gathering of young environmentalists. This year, 2,000 children and youth from over 60 nations attended.
"Four generations of my family have guided our company behind the philosophy that through our business we have the responsibility to leave our communities and therefore our world a better place," Johnson said during his acceptance speech.
"No matter who you are -- or what you do -- your actions, or your lack of action, will either help or hurt the planet," he told the forum.
Johnson has led a number of environmental initiatives involving his company and the business community, including:
-- Banning the use of chlorofluorocarbon propellants in S.C. Johnson aerosol products worldwide in 1975, three years prior to a 1978 U.S. government decision to ban these ozone-depleting substances in aerosols.
-- Setting aggressive worldwide corporate environmental goals to minimize the company's environmental impact. These include: by the end of 1995, S.C. Johnson plans to reduce the amount of packaging used by 25 percent; increase the amount of recycled packaging material used by 50 percent; and reduce air, water and solid waste disposal in manufacturing operations by 50 percent.
-- Serving as a member of the Business Council for Sustainable Development, a group of 48 global corporate leaders advising delegates to next month's United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. Johnson also serves on the National Board of Governors of the Nature Conservancy, a leading non- profit conservation organization.
S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. (commonly known as S.C. Johnson Wax) is a privately-held, 106-year-old company based in Racine, Wis., that provides quality consumer and commercial products and services in 48 countries around the world.
