UMWA LAUNCHES MAJOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND COALFIELD MOBILIZATION

Rallies and Other Actions Will Celebrate `Solidarity in the Heartland'
in Coal Communities from Virginia to Indiana
WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) launched a major Labor Day weekend coalfield mobilization today at a news conference and kick-off rally in Washington.
The unionwide mobilization will include rallies and other actions to focus attention on the UMWA's ongoing strike against some of the nation's largest coal companies.
Over 17,000 UMWA members in seven states are on strike against member companies of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association (BCOA). The central issue in the strike is job security and job opportunities. The strike began May 10.
UMWA President Richard L. Trumka will attend events in Oakwood, Va., and Madison, W.Va., on Sept. 3; Morgantown, W.Va., and Pittsburgh on Sept. 4; Lynnville, Ind., on Sept. 5; and Evansville, Ind., on Sept. 5 and 6.
The mobilization will culminate on Labor Day in Evansville, where Trumka will co-marshall southern Indiana's 107th annual Labor Day Parade and Celebration with Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh, as well as deliver the keynote address to a major rally of members of the UMWA, other labor unions and their families and supporters.
"Labor Day has traditionally been seen as a time when we remember the struggles for justice of the past, but this Labor Day, 17,000 UMWA members are engaged in a struggle for the future," Trumka said. "We're on strike fighting for jobs and economic opportunity for our families and communities. That's what Labor Day is really about."
