UMWA EXPANSION OF STRIKE TO KOPPERSTON AS MEDIATOR ENTERS TALKS IS 'SPITEFUL AND TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE,' EASTERN ASSOCIATED SAYS

CHARLESTON, W.Va., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- "Today's decision by United Mine Workers (UMWA) officials to strike Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Kopperston No. 1 mine and plant is an irresponsible escalation of the union's four-and-a-half-month-old selective strike," said Peter B. Lilly, president of Eastern Associated, based here.
"The UMWA's announcement was made even as negotiations are getting underway in Washington with William Usery serving as a mediator," he said. "This action by the union must be terribly disturbing to Secretary of Labor Reich and the Clinton administration, who have acted forthrightly to help bring an end to this strike by appointing Mr. Usery."
Lilly pointed out that the Kopperston No. 1 mine is scheduled to close in November, when its coal reserves are depleted.
"We'll have to determine whether or not it makes economic sense to mine the limited coal reserves after the strike ends," Lilly said.
Eastern Associated said 140 UMWA-represented miners are employed at the Kopperston facility, in Wyoming County. Kopperston, which began operating in 1938, is Eastern Associated's oldest mine.
Prior to this latest expansion of the UMWA's selective strike, which began May 10 against Bituminous Coal Operators' Association member companies, the Kopperston facility was the only Eastern Associated facility operating with UMWA-represented miners. Last year, the facility shipped 1.87 million tons of metallurgical coal.
