UMWA'S TRUMKA OFFERS TO MEET WITH HANSON

WASHINGTON, June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is the text of a response by United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) spokesman Jim Grossfeld to statements issued in London today by James Hanson, chairman of Hanson PLC (NYSE: HAN), and Irl Engelhardt, chairman and CEO of Peabody Holding Co.:
Judging from both Mr. Hanson's and Mr. Engelhardt's statements regarding the position of the United Mine Workers of America in its dispute with Peabody Holding Co. and other coal operators, it is obvious that neither have accurate information regarding the union's position.
In this light, UMWA President Richard Trumka is announcing that he would like to meet personally with both Mr. Hanson and Mr. Engelhardt to discuss the union's position.
The UMWA believes it is important that both Mr. Hanson and Mr. Engelhardt understand that the union is seeking the job opportunities its members have earned by virtue of their dramatic gains in productivity. Claims by Mr. Engelhardt that, for example, the UMWA "wants guarantees that all new mines to be opened by BCOA companies be automatically represented by the union" are totally false.
We hope that both Mr. Hanson and Mr. Engelhardt will respond positively to President Trumka's offer to meet with them and that a meeting can be arranged at the soonest possible opportunity.
