UMI TO PROVIDE ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO CAHNERS PUBLICATIONS

ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- UMI, a Bell & Howell company (NYSE: BHW), today announced it has signed an agreement with Cahners Publishing Company to provide electronic access to articles from 43 Cahners publications which reach more than 20 different markets.

Information from the Cahners publications will be offered electronically on UMI's full-text/full-image online service, ProQuest(R) Direct(TM), and on PowerPages, a fully-automated network of CD-ROMs. Text and images from a number of publications will be available beginning in the summer of 1996. Titles that will be offered initially include Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Broadcasting and Cable, Research & Development, Purchasing, Graphic Arts Monthly, Modern Materials Handling and Datamation.

ProQuest Direct allows users with a computer and modem, or an Internet connection, to dial in and conveniently access UMI's vast collection of newspapers, magazines, journals, periodicals and other information sources. Using ProQuest Direct, information seekers can obtain high-quality document images and full text. In addition, a unique format developed by UMI lets users retrieve graphs, charts and photos which they can enlarge, if they desire.

PowerPages is UMI's fully-automated document delivery system designed for network use. The system offers access to an electronic collection of information stored on CD-ROMs so users can retrieve complete articles as well as information from electronic databases.

UMI President and Chief Executive Officer, Hank Riner, said, "This agreement is an important step forward in our efforts to electronically provide information to end-users. Cahners' publishing strength and UMI's expertise in collecting and distributing information," he said, "will provide end-users, in both corporate and library markets, with a wealth of information now and well into the future."

Peter F. Urbach, Vice President of Electronic Publishing for Cahners, said, "This expansion of a long-standing license agreement between Cahners and UMI will cover many additional Cahners titles and new UMI services. It is a part of Cahners' aggressive program of licensing its content to third-party vendors who can make Cahners' editorial content available to additional users."
