UMAX TECHNOLOGIES SHIPS UC1200S COLOR SCANNER AND TRANSPARENCY OPTION
 Product Redefines High End of Color Scanner Market;
 New Price/Performance Point Established
 SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- UMAX Technologies today announced that the UC1200S, a $5,495 full-page flatbed color scanner, is shipping. The UC1200S redefines the market for high-end color scanners, offering unsurpassed color fidelity and resolution while costing 50 percent less than the previous performance leader. The company also announced that the UTA, a transparency option valued at $895 for UMAX Technologies' line of color desktop scanners, is shipping. As a special promotion until July 1, 1992, the UTA will be offered free of charge with the purchase of the UC1200S.
 "The UC1200S offers both high-spatial and high-color resolution for prepress users at a new point on the price/performance curve," said Vincent Tai, UMAX vice president of sales and marketing. "Comparable scanners, which sell for about $10,000, do not match our performance."
 "There is no question that this product is good value for the money," said Kristy Holch, director of Scanner Market Strategies for the market research firm BIS Strategic Decisions. "The UC1200S has established a new price point for 600 dots per inch (dpi) scanners."
 Intended for the high-end color prepress market, UMAX Technologies' UC1200S scanner sets new performance standards by incorporating several key components. An internal 30-bit scanner, the UC1200S has a maximum hardware resolution of 1,200 x 600 dpi and is capable of capturing more than one billion colors. In addition, it scans color documents using only a single light source and a single pass, which virtually eliminates registration and distortion problems. Maximum 1,200 dpi Resolution Produces Smooth, Detailed Images
 The UC1200S has a maximum hardware resolution of 1,200 x 600 dpi. Through software interpolation, its horizontal resolution can be boosted to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, resulting in a smoother, more detailed image. 10 Bits Per Pixel Captures Subtleties in Tone
 The UC1200S has an internal 30-bit architecture, which enables it to
capture more than one billion colors. When scanning over a document, the UC1200S captures a 30-bit image made up of 10 bits of data per primary color: red, green and blue (RGB). It then produces the information using 8 bits of data per primary color so images can be manipulated by standard image-editing software programs. The images that result from these scans have 24 bits of perfect color information, since the extra 6 bits (30-24-6) that are originally captured by the scanner allow it to correct for color distortions that are inevitable in scanned images.
 The UC1200S, when compared with today's 24-bit scanners, more accurately captures the darkest and lightest tones in an image. For example, in a picture of a person with thick black hair, the UC1200S will pick up the shadow and highlighting detail, as well as the actual shafts of the hair, rather than simply recording the hair as one dark mass. Single-Pass and Single-Light-Source Operation Result in Sharper, More Detailed Images
 Unlike other high-end desktop scanners, the UC1200S scans RGB with a single pass and requires only a single light source. In addition, the UC1200S light source does not incorporate prisms, which are commonly used in competing products.
 This combination of single-pass operation and a single prism- independent light source is designed to eliminate the speed, color registration and distortion problems associated with scanners that require multiple light sources or multiple passes and filters. Two-Megabyte Buffer Triples Speed
 A two-megabyte buffer has been incorporated into the UC1200S to significantly improve throughput. This buffer allows the UC1200S to scan a letter-size page at twice the speed of comparable desktop color scanners. It also improves the handling of large files. Transparency Option Provides Ease of Use
 The UTA is an optional self-contained unit that allows UC1200S users to scan transparencies. The adaptor uses a backlighting system with a moving light bar, which provides even illumination with less distortion and information loss than that which occurs with traditional mirror systems. Since the UTA is a self-contained enclosed unit, the user simply plugs in a cable and the adaptor is ready to use. Competing transparency products require factory installation because the scanner must be opened.
 The UTA allows users to switch between the scanning of film and the scanning of reflective paper with just a click of the mouse as opposed to competitive scanners, which require users to physically move the light bars. The UTA supports all UMAX color scanners for slide, transparency and film image input. Systems Compatibility, Price and Availability
 The UC1200S supports all DOS-based personal computers, the IBM PS/2 line and all 68020- and 68030-based Macintosh computers. The UC1200S color scanner has a suggested retail price of $5,495. The UTA transparency adaptor, which normally has a suggested retail price of $895, will be available to UC1200S purchasers at no charge until July 1, 1992. Both are available immediately from U.S. computer retailers. To obtain the location of the nearest dealer or for more information, call UMAX at 800-562-0311. Company Information
