ULTRA-LIGHTWEIGHT RAILROADER(R) TRAILER PASSES STRUCTURAL TESTS

LAFAYETTE, Ind., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- A new ultra-lightweight RoadRailer trailer has successfully passed stringent structural tests, RoadRailer President Lawrence J. Gross announced today. The prototype 53-foot Mark V plate-wall, air-ride trailer has a tare weight of just 15,200 lb. This is within 600 lb. of the weight of conventional highway plate-wall trailers.
"For those intermodal carriers who want efficiency equal to that of double-stack containers with a 'no-compromise' intermodal trailer, this is the vehicle of choice," Gross said. The new RoadRailer trailer will offer over 1,000 lb. additional payload capacity when compared to the newest 53-foot high-cube containers. The RoadRailer trailer's interior dimensions are fully equal to the over-the-road trailer, including unobstructed 110-inch interior height and 101-1/4-inch interior width as well as a 111-1/2-inch door opening. "The RoadRailer trailer avoids compromises on interior dimensions, weight capacity, strength and durability which are necessary in the high-cube container design," Gross said. In particular, the RoadRailer trailer features a heavy-duty floor structure which is generally better than the floor of a typical trailer, and far superior to the container floor. In addition, the RoadRailer trailer is equipped with an air-ride highway suspension as a standard item. Air-ride is becoming more in demand by many high value shippers.
The prototype trailer was subjected to forces of 200 tons in both compression and tension to qualify it for operation in trains of up to 125 trailers in length. The trailer was the first tested on Wabash National's (NYSE: WNC) new squeeze frame fixture. "The test fixture enables Wabash National engineers to refine the design of the trailer and squeeze out excess weight. Wabash National has invested over $500,000 in this research and development test stand," Wabash President Jerry Ehrlich said. "We're delighted it yielded such spectacular results so quickly."
A pilot fleet of 20 ultra-lightweight vans will be delivered to Triple Crown Services, Inc. as part of their current order for over 900 RoadRailer trailers. RoadRailer engineers will monitor the performance of the trailers in commercial service, enabling RoadRailer to fine-tune the design before commencing quantity production of the trailer in 1994.
Wabash National Corporation designs, manufactures and markets standard and customized truck trailers. The company believes that it is the second largest U.S. manufacturer of truck trailers, the leading manufacturer of fiberglass reinforced plastic trailers and aluminum plate trailers, and, through its RoadRailer Division, the world's leading manufacturer of bimodal vehicles.
