UL ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH MEXICAN CERTIFICATION ORGANIZATION

NORTHBROOK, Ill., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In the first agreement of its kind, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) and the first accredited, private, independent standards and product certification organization in Mexico, the Asociacion Nacional de Normalizacion y Certificacion del Sector Electrico (ANCE), announced a cooperative assistance agreement today that can help strengthen the Mexican Safety System and help guide manufacturers through the certification process in Mexico.
Under the terms of the agreement, UL and ANCE will be responsible for jointly managing a product testing laboratory, formerly operated by the Mexican government. UL will also provide assistance to ANCE in establishing a private product certification program in Mexico and, as appropriate, will provide ANCE with assistance in product safety testing and factory follow-up services for many of ANCE's clients.
UL will assist manufacturers needing product safety certification for Mexico by providing information about the processes manufacturers need to follow to obtain certification. UL will also actively participate in harmonizing product safety standards for various products.
According to UL President Tom Castino, the Mexican government and private sector sought UL's 100 years of safety certification experience to help them strengthen the Mexican Safety System.
The agreement makes UL the first certification organization to offer access to certifications for all of North America. Says Castino, "Our direct link to a Mexican certification organization, UL's Canadian accreditations and provincial acceptances, and widespread recognition in the United States makes it possible for manufacturers to obtain product safety certifications for products to be sold across North America through one source -- UL."
The Mexican government accredited ANCE to evaluate electrical products, both foreign and domestic, to begin the process of transferring product certification to the private sector. According to Castino, UL's assistance isn't limited to electrical manufacturers. "UL will assist any manufacturer -- regardless of product line wanting to take advantage of UL's North American services," says Castino.
Electrical products covered by the agreement include such products as: electrical dishwashers, lights, refrigerators and distribution equipment.
Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent, not-for-profit certification organization celebrating 100 years of testing for public safety. UL evaluates more than 14,000 different product types each year at its facilities in Northbrook, (corporate headquarters); Melville, N.Y.; Santa Clara, Calif.; and Research Triangle Park, N.C.
ANCE is the first accredited, private, independent, not-for-profit, certification organization in Mexico concerned with certifying electrical products.
