UL's ISO 9000 REGISTRATION PROGRAM RECEIVES RvC ACCREDITATION

UL's ISO 9000 REGISTRATION PROGRAM RECEIVES RvC ACCREDITATION
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Netherlands' Raad voor de Certificatie (RvC) voted Aug. 25 to grant accreditation to Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) to perform ISO 9000 quality system registrations. RvC accreditation signifies that UL's Registration program has been evaluated by an internationally recognized assessment body and found to comply with international requirements for quality system registrars.
ISO 9000 is an international series of quality management and quality assurance standards developed by the Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization. The series is a set of five generic quality documents which describe and define the distinctions and interrelationships among quality systems and provide guidelines for selection and use of quality standards.
Manufacturers of products, designated for regulation by the European Community (EC), will -- among other conditions -- be required through various means to demonstrate conformity with the ISO 9000 Standards or other recognized quality management standards as a stipulation for exporting products to the EC after Dec. 31, 1992. Quality system registration is also expected to become a prerequisite for manufacturers of non-regulated products who supply goods to companies that do business in the EC.
"UL chose to pursue RvC accreditation in view of the international respect and recognition of RvC's expertise," says Bob Levine, vice president -- Follow-Up Services for UL. "RvC is the most widely recognized European body that accredits registrars outside its own country and this accreditation enhances the value of the UL Registered Firm Mark already earned by the more than 140 firms since 1989."
As part of the accreditation process, two RvC assessors conducted a three-day assessment at UL's Melville, N.Y., office. Additionally, the RvC assessors accompanies UL quality auditors on two registration audits chosen by RvC at random and on short notice.
UL's registration program is designed to evaluate and register facilities to the ISO 9000 Series Standards, as well as regional equivalents, including Q 90-94, BS 5750, and EN 29000-29004. UL quality auditors can assist manufacturers, service providers and others in all phases of the registration process, including providing guidance on which model of the ISO 9000 Series Standard is applicable, the scope of registration, the readiness of the facilities selected for evaluation, and guidance on using UL's international quality network.
To assist manufacturers who wish to do business globally, UL established a worldwide network of quality system registrars. Through the network, manufacturers may obtain multiple registrations by the British Standards Institution (BSI), JMI Institute of Japan, Standards Institution of Israel (SII), Standards Australia (SA), Quality Management Institute (QMI) of Canada, Singapore Institute of Standards and Industrial Research (SISIR), Bureau of Commodity Inspection and Quarantine (BCIQ) of Taiwan, and the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM).
