UK blasts violence in Syria.

BRITAIN and other countries are preparing a joint statement condemning violence in Syria.

A draft text is being circulated at the United Nations by the UK, France, Germany and Portugal, said government sources.

The move comes amid growing concern over the brutal tactics being employed by the Syrian regime to quell unrest. At least 11 people have been killed in an escalation of the crackdown.

Thousands of soldiers backed by tanks were yesterday reported to have poured into the city where the uprising began, opening fire indiscriminately on civilians. One witness said large numbers of troops arrived in the southern city of Daraa in busloads before dawn.
