UFCW LOCAL 876 COMMENTS ON KROGER STRIKE SITUATION

UFCW LOCAL 876 COMMENTS ON KROGER STRIKE SITUATION
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich., May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was

released today by United Food & Commercial Workers Local 876:
 Where's Kroger?
Following the May 21 shareholders meeting in Cincinnati, during which Kroger CEO Joseph Pichler indicated the company was ready to return to the bargaining table pending the formulation of new counter- proposals by UFCW Local 876, the union immediately set out to accomplish that task.
President Ron Brown contacted federal mediator Michael Nowakowski on Friday, May 22, and informed him the union's new set of proposals would be completed no later than Tuesday, May 26, 1992. They were. The rank- and-file negotiating committee approved the union's new bargaining position at 9:30 a.m. on May 26. Local 876 again notified the mediator that the union was ready to resume contract talks.
As of 2:30 p.m. today, Local 876 has still not heard from Kroger. We must again ask if Michigan Kroger Marketing Area President Joel Greenisen is truly ready to sit down with his loyal employees and negotiate an end to the labor dispute he and his management team caused by their refusal to bargain in good faith.
The 7,000 members of Local 876 await, evermore impatiently, for Kroger's response to the initiatives we have taken to end the strike.
