UFCW LAUNCHES NATIONAL BOYCOTT OF WILSON FOODS COMPANY; FOLLOWS TWO- WEEK STRIKE OVER EMPLOYER DEMAND FOR CONCESSIONS TOTALLING $3.40/HOUR
WASHINGTON, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) today launched an official national boycott against the Wilson Foods Co., which is based in Oklahoma City. This boycott follows a two-week strike by more than 2,000 workers at four Wilson Foods meat processing plants over management's proposal to slash benefits by $3.40/hour, gut health care benefits for employees and retirees and completely delete any job protection language from the master employment agreement.
"Wilson employees have seen their average wages drop from $10.69/hour in 1982 to $9.10/hour today," said Phil Immesote, UFCW international vice president and director of Food Processing, Packing and Manufacturing. "Factor in inflation, and their standard of living has plummeted. Now management wants give backs of another $3.40/hour in pension, health and other benefits."
"These concession demands result from the same management thinking that has taken Wilson through two bankruptcies and a hostile takeover by Doskocil," Immesote charged. "We want a healthy company, but we cannot and will not pay the price for the actions of management which have brought the company to its present position."
UFCW workers at Local 179 in Cherokee, Iowa; Local 1200 in Oklahoma City; Local 280 in Logansport, Ind.; and Local 442 in Birmingham, Ala., have been on strike against Wilson Foods since May 3. This national boycott includes all products sold under the name Wilson, Wilson Certified or Corn King. These include hot dogs, lunch meats, ham and other meat products.
UFCW represents 1.3 million men and women employed in the retail, commercial, service, food processing, insurance, health care and many other fields.
