UFCW ISSUES REACTION TO LECHMERE DECISION

UFCW ISSUES REACTION TO LECHMERE DECISION
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is the reaction of

the 1.3 million-member United Food & Commercial Workers Union to today's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Lechmere case:
It is not surprising, but no less regrettable, that the Reagan- Bush Court has once again decided property rights are more important and more entitled to protection than the civil, human and First Amendment rights of workers and unions.
The consequences of the Lechmere decision reach far beyond the question of the right of workers to organize a union, and could lead to transforming shopping centers into zones exempt from First Amendment protection for the free exchange of ideas so vital to a democratic society.
