UCOM TO INVITE DELEGATION OF FOREIGN SEMICONDUCTOR SUPPLIERS
TOKYO, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Electronic Industries Association of Japan's (EIAJ) Users' Committee of Foreign Semiconductors (UCOM) announced, in line with an agreement made with the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) at a meeting held in Tokyo on June 4, to invite U.S. and European semiconductor suppliers to visit Tokyo in July for one-on-one meetings with potential Japanese users.
The meetings, which will take place over the three-day period beginning July 15, will be held at Ikebukuro Sunshine City in Tokyo. In announcing these meetings, UCOM's chairman Nobuo Kanol said, "They should do much to help foreign semiconductor suppliers achieve greater access to the Japanese market."
In addition to U.S. suppliers, UCOM has invited representatives of five European suppliers, who will participate with the cooperation of the European Electronic Components Association (EECA). The delegation will include 34 representatives from 24 U.S. supplier companies and eight representatives from five European supplier companies. With the addition of representatives from foreign companies with Japanese affiliates, the total number of delegates will surpass 200 persons, representing 42 U.S.-based companies and six European based companies. More than 300 representatives from 66 Japanese companies are expected to participate in one-on-one meetings.
Past UCOM efforts to improve market access for foreign semiconductors include the dispatching of four trade missions to California and Arizona, where seminars and one-on-one meetings were held. These July meetings, however, will be the first in which UCOM invites to Japan a delegation of foreign semiconductor suppliers and the first to include a large group of European suppliers. (The U.S. Department of Commerce sponsored a visit to Japan by a group of U.S. suppliers in July 1989; however, this group included representatives of only eight suppliers.)
The July meetings follow the November 1991 visit to the United States of 84 representatives from 24 Japanese semiconductor users. More than 200 one-on-one meetings were held in Santa Clara, Calif., at that time. It is expected that the number of meetings to be conducted in Tokyo will exceed the number held at the previous gathering.
In another activity under UCOM's ongoing efforts to promote greater access to the Japanese market for foreign semiconductors, a Japanese trade mission will be sent to Europe in December 1992 to hold a series of meetings with suppliers located in the region.
