UCLA NOTEBOOK: TEMP COACH KEZIRIAN AS VOCAL AS EVER.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

Blane Kezirian knows his dad as most UCLA football fans do: as the towel waver. But for one day, at the Las Vegas Bowl on Christmas Day, Ed Kezirian will be UCLA's head coach.

Kezirian, the team's academic adviser, has roamed the sidelines as a coach before. He was an assistant coach at UCLA from 1982 to 1992. And, apparently, he's picking up where he left off a decade ago.

``He said he was just taking care of the administrative part of it and all that, but he's still giving some coaching points here and there,'' said Blane Kezirian, a backup tight end. ``He used to coach here. Once a coach, always a coach.

``It's fun. He's big on being positive all the time. He's always trying to keep people upbeat. We're having some good practices, partially because of that.''

But his new role is a little different, even for Blane. Ed Kezirian has lost the towel. Now, his staples are a clipboard in hand and pen over his right ear. He runs from group to group, offering encouragement. And he's constantly clapping and chattering, of course.

``He's crazy out there,'' linebacker Marcus Reese said. ``He brings a lot of energy. He's always yelling, even when we're stretching.''

Blane, an El Camino Real High of Woodland Hills product, will be just as happy when his dad returns to roaming the sidelines, swinging a white towel above his head.

--Odds and ends: New Mexico has tickets available for the Las Vegas Bowl at half price - $25 - thanks to a promotion by the school's corporate sponsors. ... The Bruins practice at UCLA through Friday and leave for Las Vegas on Saturday. UCLA will have its first practice in Las Vegas on Sunday.
