 UCI CANCER CONFERENCE TO BE HELD FEB. 21 -22
 ORANGE, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The UCI College of Medicine


will sponsor "Advances in Oncology: Progress Brings Hope," Feb. 21-22, at the Doubletree Hotel, 100 The City Drive, Orange. The two-day conference will present new ways for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers to collaborate, providing humanistic care to cancer patients and family members in a high-tech era.
 On Friday, Feb. 21, two concurrent programs will follow a 7:30 a.m. registration. Dr. Frank Meyskens Jr., director of UCI's Clinical Cancer Center, will welcome physicians to a day of lectures, including "Cancer Epidemiology -- An Orange County Perspective," "Cyclosporin A as a Chemotherapy Modulator" and "Ovarian Cancer Screening." Presentations will be made on larynx preservation with radiation therapy, advances in managing colon and breast cancer, and clinical cancer trials and the community.
 At the same time, chief of UCI's Head and Neck Surgical Oncology Division, Dr. James Pitcock, will greet nurses and pharmacists for sessions on nursing/pharmacy research and care management. Afternoon seminars will cover patient relations: "Partnerships in Caring," the "Wellness Community," "Oncology Rehabilitation," "Survivorship" and "Collaborative Practice."
 On Saturday, Feb. 22, all participants will convene for a combined program from 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Topics will include "Can Biologic Modifiers Improve Survival in the Treatment of Advanced Malignant Melanoma?," "Cancer Pain: Advances in Regional and Systemic Pain Management," and "The New Molecular Genetics: The Prevention and Treatment of Cancer."
 Attendees will preview the new UCI Clinical Cancer Center, a $12 million, four-story, multidisciplinary outpatient facility. Located in the UCI Medical Center complex (across the street from the Doubletree Hotel), the state-of-the-art center will integrate cancer research, prevention, diagnostic treatment and rehabilitation programs.
 The two-day event is approved for 10.0 contact hours Continuing Medical Education credit for doctors and nurses; six hours for pharmacists. Tuition is $150 for practicing physicians; $125 for nurses, pharmacists and other allied health professionals. Hotel accommodations at the Doubletree Hotel are also available.
