Switzerland-based global financial services firm UBS AG (NYSE: UBS) (ZHR: UBSN) (UBSN.VX) has appointed Dr Armen V Papazian as head of Islamic finance, as part of the bank's plans to become one of the region's leading financial services providers.

In his new role, Dr Papazian will be based in the firm's Dubai International Finance Centre branch in the UAE.

Dr Papazian, who was most recently senior vice president for innovation and development at the Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX), had led the market development efforts of the exchange, and successfully launched the region's first structured products platform with both Islamic and conventional product offerings.
