UAW STRIKES MICHIGAN BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD

DETROIT, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of UAW Locals 2500, 1781, 2256 and 2145, who work at Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield offices statewide, went on strike today at 9:30 a.m. Following is a statement from the UAW Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield Bargaining Committee.
"UAW members at Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield have taken strike action after long and patient efforts by the union to reach a new agreement. Our contract expired on midnight, Aug. 31, and we engaged in additional negotiations over 19 days in an effort to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement.
In the course of these negotiations, and in recognition of the desire to assist in controlling health care costs, the union proposed a number of measures which would produce significant savings for the company. However, those contract proposals affecting UAW members at Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield in the areas of prescription drug costs, major medical costs and sick time have not been responsibly acknowledged by the company.
Instead, the company has bargained using inaccurate figures, has not provided the union with requested data, has misrepresented elements of their economic offer, and has selectively enforced the contract in violation of the across-the-board extension.
Accordingly, we are proceeding to file several unfair labor practice (ULP) charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
We are disturbed that Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield, a non- profit company, demands that its hourly workers accept minimal pay increases, while the company pays executives exorbitant salaries and pay increases which far exceed what they offer to the hourly workers. This double standard is inexcusable, especially in view of their professed concern for controlling health care costs.
In their final offer to the union, the company maintained their takeaway demands. This is unacceptable. We are committed to achieving a fair contract for our members at Michigan Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
