UAW READIES GIANT LABOR RALLY AGAINST CATERPILLAR IN MARCH
CHICAGO, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Auto Workers (UAW) union will call for a nationwide labor rally this March 22 in Peoria, Ill., against Caterpillar Inc. if a brief resumption in wage contract talks with the union next week fails to yield agreement on terms of a new three-year wage accord, Stark's News Service (SNS) reported today.
SNS is a nationwide industry wire service which reports daily on the business of producing, selling and inventorying construction machines.
SNS reported that Caterpillar local unions throughout the United States and Canada were recently notified by senior UAW officials in Detroit to make plans for workers to participate in the giant labor rally. The union represents 17,700 hourly employees at Caterpillar.
The UAW also warned that it will take "further economic action" against the company if Caterpillar continues to forge terms of a new wage contract that ignores terms of a similar accord obtained by the union in late 1991 from competitor John Deere, the news service said.
Caterpillar will present a revised offer for a new three-year wage contract early next week to union bargainers.
The UAW will expand a three-month labor strike this Sunday against the firm as 5,600 workers at two production sites in Peoria and Aurora, Ill., fail to return to work when Caterpillar voluntarily ends a lockout of the workers at the two plants.
Last Friday, Caterpillar offered to reopen talks with the union next week, coupling the offer with this Sunday's end to a company lockout of workers at Peoria and Aurora.
The UAW has said Caterpillar's decision to end worker lockouts at the two Illinois plants is a ploy designed to remedy shortages of parts and components built at the facilities, some of which are supplied to two other strike-ridden vehicle assembly sites at East Peoria and Decatur, Ill.
