UAW OFFICERS RESPOND TO STEMPEL RESIGNATION

UAW OFFICERS RESPOND TO STEMPEL RESIGNATION
DETROIT, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued

today by UAW President Owen Bieber and Vice President Stephen P. Yokich, director of the union's General Motors Department:
"We respect the courage shown by Robert Stempel in stepping down as chairman of General Motors so as to put an end to the disruption caused by the Board of Directors' tactics of management by rumor, newsleak and innuendo. We hope the GM Board of Directors will now provide the leadership necessary to support the fully focused efforts of Jack Smith, the UAW and its GM represented members and others to solve the problems facing the corporation.
"But make no mistake about it, like tens of thousands of hourly workers at General Motors and elsewhere, Mr. Stempel is a victim -- a victim of more than a decade of mismanaged and misguided social, trade and economic White House policies that have relentlessly tightened a noose around our nation's domestic auto producers.
"New corporate leadership alone is not sufficient to change those conditions. While General Motors must move rapidly to put its house in order -- so must our nation."
