UAL CORP. NOMINATES CARLA HILLS TO BOARD

CHICAGO, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- UAL Corp. (NYSE: UAL), parent company of United Airlines, has nominated former U.S. Trade Representative Carla Anderson Hills to serve on its board of directors. Upon a favorable vote by the company's shareholders, she will join the UAL board at the annual shareholders meeting in April.
"Ms. Hills' vast experience in business and government, coupled with her worldwide reputation on international trade policy, make her an excellent addition to our company's board of directors," said Stephen M. Wolf, chairman and chief executive officer of UAL Corp. and United Airlines. "As a global airline, we certainly will benefit from her extensive experience in multilateral and bilateral trade negotiations throughout the world."
Ms. Hills is currently the chairman of Hills & Company, a Washington, D.C.-based international business consulting firm, and has partner status in the law firm of Shea & Gould.
As United States Trade Representative from 1989 to 1993, Ms. Hills was a member of President Bush's Cabinet, serving as the nation's chief trade negotiator and representing American trade interests worldwide. She also held a Cabinet position in the Ford administration as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1975 to 1977.
From 1974 to 1975 Ms. Hills was assistant attorney general in the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. She served for three years as assistant U.S. attorney, Civil Division, in Los Angeles and founded successful law firms in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
Ms. Hills has served on the boards of numerous multinational corporations and was a trustee of the Brookings Institution and the Rand Corp. She also served as chairman of the Urban Institute (1983-1988), vice chairman of President Reagan's Commission on Housing and a member of his Commission on Defense Management.
Born in Los Angeles, Ms. Hills received her bachelor's degree from Stanford University, her law degree from Yale University, and has studied at Oxford University. She taught antitrust law at the University of California at Los Angeles as an adjunct professor.
Ms. Hills' appointment will bring to 14 the number of UAL Corp. board members. That is down from the 15 members serving on the UAL board in 1992, prior to the retirement of two directors at the 1992 shareholders meeting.
