U.S.A./VISA DECATHLON TEAM TO SQUARE OFF AGAINST GERMANY'S BEST

SAN FRANCISCO, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time since it was formed in 1990, the U.S.A./Visa Decathlon Team will compete as a unit when it takes on the German decathlon squad in Aachen, Germany, on Aug. 7-8, in what is being billed as a U.S.-Germany Decathlon Duel.
The event, which is scheduled to become an annual competition, marks the first match between the two countries' decathletes since 1974.
World-record holder and U.S.A./Visa Decathlon Team member Dan O'Brien will compete in individual events at Aachen in preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, later in August. Joining O'Brien will be the nine other top finishers in last month's USA Track & Field National Championships. (See below for list of team members.)
"Placing the U.S.A./Visa Decathlon Team in meets such as this one will help us again become the best decathlon nation in the world," said John Bennett, senior vice president of Visa International. "Our decathletes have made great strides in the last three years, and we are excited to be going up against the top-notch German squad."
The winning team in the meet will receive a trophy courtesy of Visa. Winning team members will receive specially designed gold medals. The team trophy will reside with the winning team for one year.
Prior to departure for Germany, the U.S. team members will train at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., on July 30-31.
A worldwide Olympic sponsor since 1986, Visa became the sole sponsor of the first-ever U.S. Decathlon Team in 1990. Visa started the Gold Medal Athlete Program in 1990 for the U.S.A./Visa Decathlon Team and the U.S. Ski Team to provide training and motivational support for Olympic hopefuls.
Visa is the largest consumer payment system in the world with more than 10 million acceptance locations and 309 million cards issued worldwide, including 152 million in the United States. Visa also has the leading global ATM network.
