U.S. soup sales increase, says Campbell.

Soup concern Campbell Soup Co., Camden, N.J., reports that worldwide its wet soup shipments declined 6 percent, however, consumer retail purchases of Campbell's wet soup in the United States showed continued strength, increasing over 3 percent in the quarter and for the fiscal year-to-date, led by ready-to-serve Chunky, Simply Home, and Swanson broths brands.

Also increased were Campbell's earnings from continuing operations for the quarter, up to $162 million from $157 million, before the restructuring charge. Campbell hopes to expand soup consumption with the introduction of ready-to-serve lines such as, tomato soup in reseable plastic containers and microwavable single-serve bowls. Campbell also says its V8 Splash-brand beverage continues to deliver outstanding growth and is now the number two shelf-stable juice beverage in U.S. grocery stores.
