U.S. reaches GATT retaliation deadline.

According to industry sources, the United States threatened to hit Canadian beer exports with punitive duties worth up to $80 million if Canada did not conform to a previous GATT ruling.

During an earlier council meeting, the United States had set a July 24 headline for Canada to meet its demand for more relaxed beer trade between the two countries.

"I don't know what the [U.S.] government is going to do," related Henry King, president of the Brewers Association of America. "But I do know that things aren't at a cooperative negotiating state at this point.

"I don't know how this will ultimately be resolved," King added.

Even if heavy tariffs are imposed on Canadian products, King continued, this round of GATT (GATT 1) negotiations "will have no effect on the regional and small brewers." King also said he did not foresee any action being taken on the state or federal level in regard to GATT 2 - a Canadian complaint about the U.S. use of the three-tier system and excise taxes.
