U.S. TEXTILE, APPAREL TRADE REPORT

 WASHINGTON, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Commerce Department today released trade figures for June and the first half of 1993, which show that:
 -- Textile and apparel imports from China, the largest foreign supplier of these goods to the United States, grew by 22 percent in June, compared to June 1992;
 -- The ASEAN countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Brunei) increased their textile and apparel exports to the United States by 37 percent in June, compared to June 1992;
 -- A total of more than 1.4 billion square meters of textile and apparel imports were shipped into the United States in June, up 16 percent from June 1992 and the largest volume for any month in history;
 -- For the first half of 1993, textile and apparel imports were up 7.7 percent from the same time in 1992, totaling 7.5 billion square meters, a record amount for the first six months of a year; and
 -- The textile and apparel trade deficit for the first half of 1993 was $14 billion, compared to the overall U.S. merchandise trade deficit of $47.6 billion (not seasonally adjusted).
 "The Clinton administration should use all trade measures available, including more effective use of the MFA (Multifiber Arrangement), to deal with this extraordinary surge of imports," said Henry A. Truslow III, president of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. "This is not the time to be rewarding Far Eastern suppliers by cutting tariffs and eliminating quotas, as would happen in the Uruguay Round of GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) trade negotiations.
 "June's imports alone represent some 140,000 job opportunities for U.S. textile and apparel workers.
 "Countries like China, which ignore fair trade principles, exploit workers and illegally transship goods, should be kept under tight MFA quotas indefinitely.
 "We urge the Clinton administration to act quickly to deal with this important surge and to take a hard line in demanding real trade reform in the GATT talks."
