U.S. TEXTILE, APPAREL TRADE REPORT

 WASHINGTON, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Commerce Department today released trade figures for February, which show that:
 -- Textile and apparel imports in February, at 1.2 billion square meters, increased by 6 percent, compared to February 1992, setting a new record for the month;
 -- The textile and apparel trade deficit in February totaled $2.1 billion, compared to the overall U.S. merchandise trade deficit of $5.67 billion;
 -- U.S. textile and apparel exports also set a new record in February, with U.S. companies exporting $836 million worth of products, up 7.8 percent from February 1992; and
 -- The largest markets for U.S. textile and apparel exports are Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, with 53 percent of total exports last year going to these countries.
 "Even while we are experiencing record imports, textile and apparel trade among North American countries continues to increase, a trend which would grow under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)," said Henry A. Truslow III, president of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute. "Clearly the NAFTA could allow us to export more textile and apparel products and support U.S. industry, jobs and the economy in the process, a major goal of the Clinton Administration.
 "But this will not happen unless the administration acts decisively to make major changes in the textile proposal being considered in the Uruguay Round of trade talks," he said. "That proposal would destroy any opportunities for U.S. textiles and apparel provided by NAFTA and would also put over a million U.S. workers in those industries out of work.
 "We need a new approach in these negotiations and we are ready to work with the Clinton administration to develop one."
