U.S. SEN. SPECTER ANNOUNCES U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
AWARD OF $6.565 MILLION TO PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
WASHINGTON, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $6.565 million grant to the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) for the purpose of making improvements to several terminal buildings.
Specter said the funding, which under DoT's Airport Improvement Program, will be used to modernize four PHL terminals by building new concession areas, improving utilities and installing new carpeting and graphics. The terminals were originally constructed the early 1970s.
Specter and the Tri-State Congressional Delegation earlier this year wrote to Transportation Secretary Andrew Card requesting $21.7 million in funds for the ongoing expansion program at the Philadelphia International Airport. Funding for the terminal improvements was included in this request.
"I feel that this award is a step in the right direction in helping secure funds towards PHL's multi-year program that will increase capacity and ensure safety at the airport and enable the PHL to provide the levels of air service needed by the tri-state area," Specter said in announcing the award. "I feel the creation of jobs through funding such as this is helpful toward realizing economic recovery in the Northeast."
