U.S. NEUROSURGICAL(R) TO OPEN GAMMA KNIFE CENTER IN KANSAS CITY, MO.

ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- GHS, Inc. announced that its subsidiary, U.S. NeuroSurgical, Inc.(R) will open its initial Gamma Knife Center in Kansas City, Mo., in June on the campus of Research Medical Center. The center is part of Health Midwest, a consortium of 11 hospitals and numerous affiliates.
The Gamma Knife is a unique stereotactic radiosurgical device used to treat brain tumors and other malformations of the brain without invasive surgery. The FDA-approved Gamma Knife delivers a single, high dose of ionizing radiation emanating from multiple cobalt-60 sources. The lesion is first targeted with precision accuracy using advanced imaging and three dimensional treatment planning techniques such as CT Scans, MR Scans, conventional X-rays, or angiography.
The procedure, performed in a single treatment, has significant advantages over conventional brain surgery. The hospital stay is decreased from an average of 16 days to less than one day, surgical and post-surgical risks are eliminated, and the cost of this type of radiosurgery is one-half to one-third that of conventional neurosurgery. The Gamma Knife has been safely used for over 30 years to treat more than 15,000 patients. Clinical outcomes are excellent, surpassing those achieved with conventional neurosurgery.
The Gamma Knife Center in Kansas City will be the only one operating in a five-state area, and one of only 15 in the United States. Kansas City, a strong health care market, is a natural center for a large catchment area. U.S. NeuroSurgical is currently in negotiations to establish a second facility in one of the largest metropolitan areas of the United States.
