U.S. NAVY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES SECOND SHIP-LAUNCH TEST FLIGHT OF HARPOON ANTI-SHIP MISSILE

U.S. NAVY SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES SECOND SHIP-LAUNCH
TEST FLIGHT OF HARPOON ANTI-SHIP MISSILE
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The U. S. Navy successfully completed the second ship-launch test flight of a Harpoon anti- ship missile with Block 1D system improvements on Nov. 23 at the Pacific Missile Test Center at Point Mugu, Calif.
The test completes the development test phase of the 10- flight test program; all five launches successfully demonstrated the new Block 1D features. The remaining five flights will be operational evaluation flights by the Navy's Operation Test and Evaluation Forces.
The missile was launched from the USS Jouett, a guided missile cruiser equipped with the newest version of the Harpoon Ship Command and Launch Control System, which provides the capability to use all Block 1D features.
During flight, the missile executed three pre-planned waypoint maneuvers before approaching the target, a decommissioned destroyer. The missile's radar seeker searched the target area, acquired and guided the missile to the target in the presence of countermeasures directed against the missile. The missile then made a direct hit.
During the developmental flight test program, Block 1D Harpoons were launched from A-6E aircraft and the USS Jouett to evaluate the new Block 1D features, including the re-attack capability. The first test was conducted on Sept. 4.
Developed by McDonnell Douglas, Block 1D improvements include guidance software changes that allow the improved Harpoon to re- attack a target by flying a cloverleaf pattern if the missile does not acquire the target on the first approach.
In addition, the Block 1D Harpoon has a two-foot fuel tank extension that approximately doubles the range of the current Harpoon Block 1C missile.
Navy operational evaluation flight tests are scheduled to begin next year. Upon completion of the flight test program and certification, the Navy plans to retrofit many Harpoon missiles currently in inventory with the Block 1D system upgrades.
McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems Co., a division of McDonnell Douglas, has produced the Harpoon since 1975. McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems received a $9.8 million contract in 1989 to develop and implement Block 1D improvements.
McDonnell Douglas has delivered more than 5,700 Harpoons to the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and 20 international customers. Harpoon can be launched from aircraft, surface ships, submarines and mobile land-based launchers.
Other Harpoon variants include the Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM). SLAM combines the Harpoon airframe with a new guidance system to allow precision strikes against land and ship targets.
McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems builds the Harpoon and SLAM at its production facility in St. Charles, Mo. McDonnell Douglas has produced more than 100,000 guided missiles for the Department of Defense.
