U.S. ITER project highlights.

Significant progress is ongoing at the U.S. ITER Project Office (USIPO). In Magnet Systems, Central Solenoid Assembly team members conducted a Concept Selection Review, and preliminary design is scheduled to be completed in September. The preliminary design of the CS Insert Coil has been completed. A full-scale cross section of a module is scheduled to be vacuum-pressure impregnated and tested in July.

USIPO team members reduced the cost and improved the safety of Tokamak Cooling Water System subsystems by eliminating pathways to release radioactive liquid. Other approved project change requests improve fabrication by reducing the size of bioshield/cryostat penetrations and reducing the risk of pipe breakage, as well as improving fabrication of the blanket manifold and the ability to detect/locate pipe leaks. The team also developed preliminary design documents using industry expertise provided by AREVA Federal Services. Preliminary design is schedule for completion in December.

Diagnostics staff completed Conceptual Design Reviews for 2 of 8 U.S. diagnostic systems. They also developed a successful new strategy for the modular packaging of diagnostics into port plugs. Team members in Vacuum Pumping and Fueling developed and modeled new concepts for tritium-compatible roughing pump trains; completed conceptual designs of main manifolds for the torus, cryostat, and other vacuum systems; designed prototypes for pellet injector subsystems; and developed concepts for plasma current disruption mitigation. U.S. and international organization schedules have been aligned with the approval of project change requests at the 10 and in the U.S.

Tokamak Exhaust Processing System staff completed conceptual design input and the Conceptual Design Review. They have also completed development of the conceptual layout and 3-D models and initiated preliminary design. The team developed interface sheets, a seismic strategy, and a tritium equipment list.

The Preliminary Design Review for Electrical Power Systems was successfully convened, and the team has developed a more practical plan for redistribution of scope amongst the U.S., the European Union, and China. A revised cost estimate based on input from industry has been prepared.

Ion Cyclotron Heating Systems team members have begun preliminary design of the coaxial transmission line and matching system and are conducting high-power tests of gas-cooled and water-cooled prototype transmission line and system components. They evaluated layout options for matching system components and completed layout of gas break locations. U.S. and international organization schedules have been aligned (with approval of project change requests).

Electron Cyclotron Heating Systems staff completed preliminary design of 5 of the 10 waveguide components. Gyrotron fabrication is 50% complete, and the superconducting magnet has been successfully tested. Team members are fabricating prototype waveguide transmission line components and have conducted low-power tests. U.S. and international organization schedules have been aligned (with approval of project change requests).
