U.S. HEALTHCARE REPORTS RESULTS FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER
 AND RECORD JANUARY MEMBERSHIP GROWTH
BLUE BELL, Pa., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- U. S. Healthcare, Inc. (NASDAQ: USHC), one of the nation's leading providers of managed health care services, today reported earnings of $43,271,000 or 60 cents per share for the fourth quarter of 1991 and $151,100,000 or $2.09 ($2.08 fully diluted) per share for the year ended Dec. 31, 1991.
Revenue for the fourth quarter was $459 million, up 32 percent over the fourth quarter last year. For the year ended Dec. 31, 1991, revenue exceeded $1.7 billion, up 28 percent over 1990. Membership in U.S. Healthcare-owned HMOs grew to 1,240,000 members at Dec. 31, 1991, a gain of 135,000 from a year ago, the largest annual membership increase in five years. In addition, during the same period, membership in employer-insured plans for which U.S. Healthcare provides comprehensive managed care services increased from 28,000 to 53,000.
The company also reported that, in 1992, the membership in the company's HMOs is growing at a record rate. As of Jan. 31, 1992, membership grew to approximately 1,330,000 members, a gain of 90,000 during the month of January. Costas C. Nicolaides, executive vice president and chief financial officer, said this is the largest increase in membership in any one month in the history of the company, surpassing the January 1991 growth of 56,000 members by 61 percent. The New York and Southeast Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) areas had the largest increases, contributing 43 percent and 26 percent of the growth, respectively. Nicolaides attributed the record growth to broader recognition that U.S. Healthcare's medical delivery systems provide high quality, affordable care in a period of increased public concern over heath care costs.
