U.S. EPA STATEMENT ON SMOG PROTEST

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by U.S. EPA Regional Administrator Felicia Marcus regarding today's protest by the service station industry and California officials over reform of the Smog Check program:
"It is ironic that on this, the third anniversary of the passage of the federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, some of the leadership of the state of California has chosen to align itself with the interests of a few rather than the health of the 24 million Californians who breathe unhealthy air. These leaders today took the time to stage a media event with a special interest group rather than work with U.S. EPA to create an improved Smog Check program that will clean the air, create jobs, and provide consumers with tangible benefits for the dollars they spend.
"California is still burdened with the dirtiest air in the United States, and U.S. EPA has every intention to uphold the law and ensure that Californians get the clean air to which they are legally entitled. While we remain committed to working with the members of the California legislature who are interested in crafting a Smog Check program that fits California's unique needs, we will not accept a plan that is more committed to preserving the status quo than protecting the health of Californians."
