U.S. EPA SETTLES HAZARDOUS WASTE VIOLATIONS AT LILLY INDUSTRIES

SAN FRANCISCO, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced the signing of a consent agreement and final order with Lilly Industries Inc. (NASDAQ: LICIA), to settle charges that the company violated hazardous waste regulations at its facility at 901 West Union St., Montebello, Calif. Under the agreement, Lilly Industries must pay a penalty of $65,750 and take measures to fully comply with state and federal hazardous waste laws.
"These hazardous waste regulations protect public health and the environment from the threat of accidents and spills," said Jeff Zelikson, director of hazardous waste management for U.S. EPA's western region. "U.S. EPA strictly enforces them."
Lilly Industries Inc. manufactures industrial paints. The hazardous wastes generated by the Montebello facility include spent solvents, paint sludge, caustic water and caustic sludge.
The agreement settles charges of 15 counts of violations of state laws implementing the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The violations include failing to keep hazardous waste drums closed, failing to properly label drums, failing to maintain required documentation of worker training, and failing to notify a receiving hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility of the applicable standards for treating the hazardous wastes generated by Lilly.
