U.S. EPA PROPOSES TO AUTHORIZE STATE HAZARDOUS WASTE PROGRAM
SAN FRANCISCO, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The press release below, as issued by U.S. EPA on May 6, 1992, contained incorrect dates for the public hearing and written public comment deadline. The correct date is June 15, 1992 for both the hearing and the written comment deadline. The press release below contains the corrected date:
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced its tentative determination that California's program to implement the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), satisfies all the requirements necessary for the state to take responsibility for that law's enforcement. The law governs the safe management of hazardous wastes.
"Authorizing the state of California to enforce the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act will streamline regulation by eliminating duplicative state and federal permit and reporting requirements," said Jeff Zelikson, U.S. EPA's regional director of hazardous waste management.
Under federal law, the U.S. EPA authorizes states to take over enforcement of RCRA if the state program is equivalent to or consistent with the federal RCRA program. Nationwide, U.S. EPA has authorized 45 states to implement RCRA. California submitted its application for authorization on Dec. 20, 1991.
The U.S. EPA's proposed authorization will not be finalized until after the public has an opportunity to comment on it. A public hearing on the matter will be held on June 15, 1992 at 9 a.m., 75 Hawthorne St., First Floor, California-Nevada Room. Written comments can be submitted until June 15, 1992.
