U.S. EPA ISSUES PERMITS FOR DISPOSALOF WASTES OFF AMERICAN SAMOA

 SAN FRANCISCO, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced its tentative decision to issue permits to StarKist Samoa and VCS Samoa Packing to dispose of fi processing wastes in the ocean off Pago Pago, American Samoa.
 The permits will allow the canneries to continue dumping fish processing wastes about six nautical miles off Pago Pago for three years. The permits require the canneries to conduct periodic testing of the waste stream and the disposal area to ensure that disposal operations meet federal guidelines and to document the effects of the dumping at the ocean disposal site.
 The public has 30 days to comment on the proposed permits. U.S. EPA will prepare responses to comments and issue final permits in late July.
 The permits will be issued under the federal Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act.
