U.S. EPA HOLDS OPEN HOUSE FOR CASMALIA RESOURCES SITE
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) will hold an Open House to discuss site stabilization work that begins this month at the Casmalia Resources site, an inactive hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facility 10 miles southwest of Santa Maria, Calif.
The Open House will be held on Aug. 29, 1992, between 2 and 4 p.m. at the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, Betteravia Government Center, 511 East Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria. Representatives of U.S. EPA, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, and Santa Barbara County will be available at the meeting to answer questions from the public and the news media.
The site stabilization work, to be directed by U.S. EPA over the next year, has three major objectives. The first is to pump out and treat contaminated liquids which are spreading groundwater pollution beneath the site. The second is to minimize erosion of the temporary earthen caps covering the site's hazardous waste landfills. The third is to continue monitoring the extent of groundwater contamination. The cost of these measures is expected to be about $2 million.
