U.S. EPA FINES SAN DIEGO FIRM $250,000 FOR CLEAN WATER VIOLATIONS

U.S. EPA FINES SAN DIEGO FIRM $250,000 FOR CLEAN WATER VIOLATIONS
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) have fined Solar Turbines Inc. of San Diego $250,000 for discharging polluted wastewater into the city of San Diego's sewer system. The fine is included in a settlement reached with the company.
"This settlement serves notice that industries will not economically benefit from violating the law and polluting the environment," said Harry Seraydarian, U.S. EPA's Water Management Division director. "U.S. EPA will take action to ensure that companies that fail to properly dispose of their hazardous wastes do not gain an economic advantage over those who obey the law."
Solar Turbines, which manufactures components for gas turbines, discharged wastewater exceeding federal pretreatment limits for zinc, lead, chromium, copper, nickel, and pH, a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of water, numerous times between January 1987 and March 1991.
Pretreatment regulations require industries to treat toxic wastes to remove harmful pollutants before discharging these wastes to a treatment facility. Sewage treatment plants are not equipped to effectively treat raw industrial wastes, which can pass through the treatment process and be released to the environment.
