U.S. EPA FINES PHOENIX FIRM $24,000 FOR ILLEGAL FLUID INJECTION
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) has fined Ray Stevens Paving Co. Inc. $24,000 for illegal injection of contaminated fluids into an injection well in Phoenix, Ariz. The firm also reported false information to the U.S. EPA concerning well disposal practices, the U.S. EPA said today.
In December 1991, U.S. EPA ordered the firm to cease injection, and the company complied. The order was part of an ongoing U.S. EPA initiative to identify and properly close injection wells that may be endangering underground sources of drinking water.
The well was a seepage pit that received water from the steam cleaning of paving equipment. Transmission fluid, grease, oil, asphalt, antifreeze and solvents were washed into the well. The fluids contained barium, cadmium, chromium, lead and xylenes at levels which exceeded maximum contaminant levels for drinking water, jeopardizing underground water supplies.
