U.S. EPA FILES SUIT AGAINST TELEDYNE INC. FOR VIOLATIONS

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced that it has filed suit against Teledyne Inc. (NYSE: TDY) for discharging toxic wastewater from its aeronautical facility in San Diego to the city's Point Loma sewage treatment plant.
"Teledyne must be held accountable for failing to treat its industrial waste before discharging it to a waste treatment facility that may not have been able to remove all of these toxic chemicals," said Harry Seraydarian, U.S. EPA's water management division director. "Treating industrial waste so that harmful chemicals are removed is essential in keeping toxic pollutants out of our waterways, in this case, the ocean off Point Loma."
According to the suit, between July 1988 and March 1990 Teledyne -- which manufactures aerospace components -- flushed water from a metal coating and etching operation that contained chromium in levels above federal pretreatment standards, a violation of the Clean Water Act (CWA). During this time, the company diluted the chemicals with water as a substitute for treatment, also a violation of the CWA. The company has been in compliance since 1990 when it installed a treatment system, so the suit seeks penalties for the company's past violations.
Sewage treatment plants are not equipped to effectively treat industrial wastes, which can then pass through the treatment process and be discharged to rivers, oceans, and other waterways. The CWA sets pretreatment standards, which are limits on the amount of chemicals that can be discharged by industries to a sewer system. Companies must treat this chemical wastewater to remove harmful pollutants and meet the standards before discharging these wastes to a treatment facility.
Teledyne is subject to civil penalties of up to $25,000 per day per violation.
