U.S. EPA CITES UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK VIOLATIONS

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced it has cited four companies, two gas stations, and the Tucson International Airport in Arizona for a total of $2,850 for violating underground storage tank (UST) regulations under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which governs management of hazardous waste.
"Compliance with underground storage tank regulations is crucial to preventing groundwater and soil contamination from leaking underground tanks," said Jeff Zelikson, director of hazardous waste management for U.S. EPA's western regional office. "Gas station owners and operators who violate these regulations put our water supplies at risk and may create costly cleanup problems to deal with in the future."
U.S. EPA found the six facilities had a total of 15 violations, including failing to install leak detection and spill prevention devices and failing to conduct monthly monitoring of product levels in underground tanks, and failure to operate the release detectors adequately.
The U.S. EPA's underground storage tank field citation program is designed to quickly bring underground storage tank facilities into compliance with federal UST regulations. The citations impose penalties which generally range from $150 to $300 per violation, and require owners and operators to take measures to bring their facilities into compliance. If they do not, they will be subject to a more formal enforcement action, which carries much stiffer penalties of $10,000 per violation per tank per day.
The citations were issued immediately after inspections by the U.S. EPA and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). The facilities cited were Hinckley & Schmidt Co., Sawyer Aviation Co., ACE Asphalt Co., and Circle K, all located in Phoenix, and the Citizen Auto Service and the International Tucson Airport, both in Tucson.
