U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY UPGRADES TO NEW CRAY RESEARCH SYSTEM

EAGAN, Minn., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Cray Research, Inc. (NYSE: CYR) announced today that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ordered a CRAY C94 supercomputer. The system is scheduled to be installed in second quarter 1994 at the National Environmental Supercomputer Center in Bay City, Mich.
The EPA installed its first dedicated supercomputing system, a CRAY Y-MP supercomputer, in August 1992. The new CRAY C94 supercomputer replaces the existing system and will provide increased processing capacity for more complex problems and more accurate modeling of environmental conditions.
The CRAY C94 supercomputer will be used by researchers nationwide to study environmental impacts of pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), car emissions and acid rain, and to perform global climate modeling. In particular, the supercomputer will be used to model air quality to enable the EPA to monitor compliance with the Clean Air Act, and to measure the effects of pollutants on ground water, vegetation and animals. Studies of the Grand Canyon, the Great Lakes and the Chesapeake Bay are currently being modeled on the existing Cray Research supercomputer.
Cray Research creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
