U.S. BIOSCIENCE AMENDS NEW DRUG APPLICATION FOR ETHYOL

WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Bioscience, Inc. (AMEX: UBS) today announced the submission of an amendment to its New Drug Application (NDA) for Ethyol (WR-2721: amifostine) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The amendment includes data from the completed pivotal trial in ovarian cancer comprising 200 patients with advanced disease, and additional survival information on the original group of 121 patients enrolled in the trial. New data generated from other clinical and pre- clinical studies are also included. Ethyol has been under clinical investigation as a selective protector of healthy cells from the toxicities of certain chemotherapy drugs such as cyclophosphamide and cisplatin. Studies are also ongoing to determine Ethyol's effectiveness as a selective protector of healthy tissues in patients receiving radiation therapy.
The original NDA was reviewed by the Oncology Drug Advisory Committee in January 1992. Approval for Ethyol was withheld at that time and additional data were requested, specifics of which were discussed with the FDA at a meeting in March, 1992. The amended NDA provides the company's response to this request.
