PORTLAND, Ore., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The Portland Creative Conference: A Celebration of Film & Television, said today it is seeking corporate sponsors to provide 300 student scholarships for the unique, three-day event being held at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts this Sept. 16, 17 and 18. The one-of-a-kind forum, now in its fourth year, provides the opportunity for media professionals, students and film buffs alike to hear some of the most influential individuals working in the film and television industry speak firsthand about the creative process.
U.S. Bank takes the lead as first corporate sponsor to support the student scholarship funds. "Offering access to this terrific conference reinforces the importance of nurturing the creative spark," said Glenn Jacobs, vice president and senior relationship officer of U.S. Bank. "By investing in education, we are investing in our future. We are proud to provide 'start-up financing' for the Portland Creative Conference Scholarship Program."
The Portland Creative Conference is the brainchild of a group of local filmmakers and business people spearheaded by Will Vinton, the award-winning creator of Claymation(R). Vinton cited the conference as one of the most significant cultural and business events offered in Portland. "This conference is inspiring, educational, and an excellent opportunity for students to hear industry luminaries explore their concept of creativity, share anecdotes and examples of their work, and talk about how they arrived at their current levels of success," stated Vinton.
"In fact, it has always been our goal to make this conference accessible to students," added local filmmaker Dan Biggs of Dan Biggs Productions. "Otherwise, they have to leave the area to be exposed to this level of talent and expertise, and we want them to see that there are opportunities for growth, training and jobs right here at home."
Portland, "home" to a growing number of film and television professionals, is recognized as a "hot" creative center. The city hosts several internationally award-winning advertising agencies, production houses, directors and a world-renowned animation community.
The Portland Creative Conference Scholarship Program is an opportunity for businesses to support the economic development and growth of this strategic industry in Oregon. Organizers hope to garner enough local business support for 300 students to attend the conference free of charge.
"Businesses succeed when creative people work for them," commented Vinton. "Dividends will pay back in years to come when these scholarship winners become young professionals in the community."
The scholarships, offered on a competitive basis, are a means of reaching out to the student community encouraging talented newcomers who otherwise would not be able to attend The Portland Creative Conference. Along with submitting a formal application, students aged 15 and older will be requested to identify their current educational institution and furnish a letter of recommendation.
Previous conference speakers have included award-winning actors Martin Sheen and Ed Asner; Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons; Terry Louise Fisher, writer/co-creator of LA Law; legendary animator Chuck Jones; Portland natives, director Gus Van Sant and Dan Weiden, the man at the helm of NIKE's phenomenally successful "Just Do It" campaign.
